Yankees Redsox series recap

Game 1

Yankees 4 Redsox 1

Chris Sale picks up his 7th loss on the season as the Yankees were able to take game one of the rivalry.

JA Happ came into this one struggling this season and had some concerned about whether re upping his contract this offseason was a good move. But in this one, he sure earned some of the money by throwing 5 innings of one run ball, allowing 3 hits and striking out 5. The only run of the game for the Sox came in the second inning with a solo home run by Rafael Devers. After that, Happ and the dominant Yankee bullpen kept the Redsox bats quiet. The Yankees went with the big guns to close it out with Ottavino, Kahnle, Britton and Chapman relieving Happ to shut them down.

Offensively, the Yankees struggled in the beginning off Chris Sale as they were whiffing on several of his pitches. However, the Yankees were able to get something going in the 3rd inning, DJ LeMahieu was able to knock home Gio Urshela with an RBI double moving Gardner to 3rd. Aaron Hicks then gave the Yankees the lead singling home Gardner and LeMahieu! DJ LeMahieu then tacked on one more with a solo shot in the 5th making it 4-1! And that would be the score at the end of the game giving the Yankees the edge so far in the rivalry series!!

Game 2

Yankees 5 Redsox 3

The Yankee bullpen salvaged another game as the Yankees win the game and the series vs Boston!

The Yankees took the lead in the 2nd inning of this one. After Gio Urshela tied it early in the inning with a single to right, scoring Gleyber Torres, DJ LeMahieu (again) drove in runs with runners in scoring position! He singled scoring both Morales and Urshela! This made it a 3-1 game! After the Redsox matched it with 2 runs of there own in the 4th, Gary Sanchez hit a 2 run, go-ahead home run to make it 5-3 in the 5th inning! This is a lead they wouldn’t relinquish again!

Domingo German got the start in this one and he was not himself from his previous starts this season. He only lasted 3.2 innings in which he allowed 3 runs on 6 hits. However he was able to still strike out 8 during this time. Chad Green followed him and threw 1.1 innings of work. He didn’t allow a run and earned the win in this one. The Yankees then went to several arms to finish the job in this one. They went to 5 guys in the final 4 of this game who were Kahnle, Ottavino, Holder, Britton and Chapman. Chapman struggled a little bit in the 9th which made Yankee fans hold there breath a little, but a double play killed the Red Sox chances at a comeback giving the Yanks the series W.

Game 3

Clint Frazier costed the Yankees crucial runs as they weren’t able to come up with the sweep.

CC Sabathia was on the hill for this one. CC immediately allowed a first inning homer to JD Martinez. In the 2ns, Eduardo Nuñez singled home another run making it 2-0. Bogarts added on in the 4th with a solo shot to make it 3-0. However, Luke Voit and Gio Urshela helped chip away at the lead accounting for 2 runs cutting the deficit to 1 run heading into the 7th inning. The Yankees had a chance to do some more damage but after Gleyber Torres broke for second with Hicks on 3rd, the Red Sox quickly figured out the trick play and got out of it.

However, due to Clint Frazier’s malfunctions in the field, this game was soon put out of reach. With a runner on first and and one out, Frazier miss played a one hopper that Nuñez hit and the ball rolled all the way to the wall. This made it 5-2 Boston. But the woes didn’t end for Frazier. Andrew Benintendi hit a fly ball that hit off Frazier’s glove which allowed Holt to score making it 6-2 Sox. Boston added 2 more in the 8th where one of the runs was also due to another terrible play by Frazier. The Yankees were able to cut into the deficit a little in the 8th by scoring 3 runs of their own, but it wasn’t nearly enough to come back from after the Redsox blew it open in the 7th and 8th.

Despite Clint Frazier’s errors in game 3, this was still a successful series with the Yankees as the widened the gap between them and Boston and extended their lead on Tampa in the AL east! The Yankees will clash with Toronto next!
