Yankees Orioles series Preview

By Max Grzymala

Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports (Wendell Cruz)

The Yankees just took over first place against the Rays and will look to build off that great series! This could be a chance for the Yanks to pad their division lead against the struggling O's.

Game 1 Monday May 20th

Pitcher Preview

In the first game of this series it will be J.A. Happ and Andrew Cashner facing off. Happ and Cashner faced off a few days ago with the Yankees coming out with a win. However Cashner pitched a better game than Happ, allowing just 2 runs over 6 innings. Happ allowed 3 runs in 5 innings but the Yankees still got the win. It should be another good matchup, where offense could be dominant!

Keys to the game

Put the ball in play: The Yankees struck out far too many times against Cashner in his last start and paid the price managing only 2 runs. For the Yankees to be more successful they need to make more consistent hard contact.

Keep on throwing strikes: Happ wasn’t at his best his last starts against the O’s but he was throwing the ball over the plate. If he can continue that he will have a much better chance at success!

Location: Camden Yards

First Pitch: 7:00 PM ET

Game 2 Tuesday May 21

Pitcher Preview

Another rematch from last week’s series at Yankee stadium it will be David Hess for the Orioles and Domingo German for the Yankees. Hess took a loss his last start as he was shelled for 5 runs and looked completely out of place. German will look for his 9th win of the season and build off his last start which he went 7 innings and only allowed 1 run!

Keys to the game

Keep it rolling: German has been one of the best pitchers in the majors this year(he leads the MLB in wins). He just needs to keep doing what he has been doing and the Yankees will be in great position for a win!

Same thing as last time: The Yankee offense torched David Hess last game and they just need to keep the same approach and this could be another dominating win!

Location: Camden Yards

First Pitch: 7:05 PM ET

Game 3 Wensday May 22

Pitcher Preview

It will be a matchup of one surging pitcher and one sinking pitcher. CC Sabathia takes the hill for the Yanks and he’s been dominant of late and could dominate the Orioles. Dan Straily has been the complete opposite as he has been getting dominated. He has an ERA over 8 and has allowed 10 home runs to this point in the season.

Keys to the game

Keep the ball down: CC has been great this season but one problem he’s had is giving up the home run ball. If he could prevent that he will be in store for an even greater performance!

Get the ball in the air: Dan Straily has also had a habit of giving up home runs this season, but the Yankees should take advantage of this and try to get the ball in the air!

Location: Camden Yards

First Pitch: 7:05 PM ET

Game 4 Thursday May 23

Pitcher Preview

In the final game of this 4 game set the Yankees will have another big advantage in terms of starting pitching. As Masahiro Tanaka will go for the Yanks and Dylan Bundy will go for the O’s. Both pitchers are prone to the home run ball and for either to do well they need to keep the ball in the ball park!

Keys the game

Keep the ball down: Tanaka will be great no matter what but he’ll have a better game if he can keep the ball in the park!

Put the ball in the air: The Yanks should take advantage of Bundys weakness and try and hit some balls out of the park! It will go a long way to helping the Yanks get the win!

Location: Camden Yards

First Pitch: 12:35 PM ET

The Yanks will have a chance to start building a lead over the second place Rays in this 4 game set against the O’s. As long as the Yanks play well they could leave this series with a 4 game sweep.
