Yankees bullpen blows late lead lose to Astros 4-3
The Yankees lose a tough one to the Astros that was a game the Yankees most definitely should have won.
The Yankee offense had just enough to put the Yankees in a position to win especially against a top tier pitcher like Verlander. Tanaka also pitched very well allowing only 1 run through 6 innings of work he out dueled Verlander and put the Yankees in a position to win. The bullpen was what failed for the Yankees tonight. Britton allowed the game to be tied when Chirinos hit a 2 run double off him. Ottavino was more unlucky when Carlos Correa gave the Astros the lead on an infield single.
The Yankees started the scoring in the top half of the 3rd when Voit hit an RBI single to drive in Gio Urshela to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
The Astros would tie the game when Altuve homered off Tanaka to tie the game up 1-1 in the 4th.
The Yankees would retake the lead in 5th when Judge sent a ball over the right field wall to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
In the 6th Clint Frazier hit an RBI single to drive in D.J. LeMahieu and give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.
Then in the 7th the Astros would strike back when Robinson Chirinos hit a 2 run double to tie the game at 3 off Zack Britton.
In the 8th the Yankees would have a bad break when the Astros took the lead on an infield single off the bat of Carlos Correa. This gave the Astros a 4-3 lead. A lead the Astros wouldn't relinquish.
The Yankees will play tomorrow at 8:00 PM ET in the second game of this 3 game set with the Astros. Hopefully the Yankee bullpen can perform better tomorrow.
