Yankees Astros Series preview

By Max Grzymala

New York Yankees

The Yankees are coming off a big 3 game sweep against the Rays and they will now face off against the Astros in another tough series!

Game 1 Thursday June 20th

Pitcher Preview

The Yankees will be using an opener in this game a strategy that has been working well. Chad Green will be the opener as he faces off against Framber Valdez. Green had a tough start to this season as he was sent down, but since being called back up he has pitched much better. Valdez has had a terrific season, he has a 2.77 ERA in just under 40 innings pitched and has done a great job of limiting the home run ball. This could be a tough match up for the Yankees.

Keys to the game

Keep on improving: Green hasn't had the best season but every outing he seems to be getting better so if he can continue this he should at least put the Yankees in a position to win.

Small ball: In order to score runs the Yankees can't just wait for the home run, as Valdez has allowed just 2 homers all year. The Yankees need to get men on base and drive them in!

Game 2 Friday June 21

Pitcher Preview

This will be one of the most competitive match ups of the series. James Paxton will face off against Brad Peacock, both have very similar stats in terms of ERA (mid 3s) and WHIP(mid 1s). Paxton has been a more prolific strikeout artist as hes struck out 71 batters in 51 innings and Peacock has struck out 76 in 76 innings. Any way you look at it this should be a great match up.

Keys to the game

Keep building: Paxton recently came off the IL and every start hes looked better. Just keep that up and the Astros will be in trouble. Keep the approach: The Yanks shouldn't change anything from the Rays series just keep doing what they've been doing and they should be more than fine!

Game 3 Saturday June 22

Pitcher Preview

This will be another great potential pitcher duel! Masahiro Tanaka will go for the Yankees and he is coming off a complete game shut out against the Rays where he was completely dominant! Wade Miley will pitch for the Astros and he has been more than a productive pitcher. Miley has an ERA in the mid 3s and gives the Astros a chance to win every time he takes the mound. This should be a great match up!

Keys to the game

Keep it going: If Tanaka can be half the pitcher he was against the Rays that's almost a guaranteed win, just keep doing what your doing Tanaka!

Keep attacking: The Yankees have a great offense, especially against lefties, they knocked the regining CY Young award winner out in the first inning! Keep up that approach and the Yanks will be more than fine!

Game 4 Sunday June 23

Pitcher Preview

This match up could be a little one sided towards the Astros. J.A. Happ will face off against Justin Verlander. Verlander has been his normal dominant self this season, while Happ has struggled to find his groove. This could still potentially be a good match up if Happ pitches to his potential.

Keys to the game

Keep improving: Happ had a nice start against the Rays and if he can build off that he can put the Yankees in a great position to win.

Attack Early: Verlander has a knack for the strikeout so don't wait for him to get 2 strikes on you, if the Yankees get a pitch they like... swing!

Location: Yankee Stadium

First Pitch: 2:05 PM ET

This will be a tough series for the Yanks as the Astros are one of the best teams in baseball, but so are the Yankees and if all goes well we could see a series win or even better a series sweep!
